Fibroids

What are Uterine Fibroids?
Uterine fibroids are benign (non-cancerous) tumors that arise from the muscular layer of the uterus. They are also called leiomyomas or myomas. While most fibroids are harmless and asymptomatic, they can sometimes cause significant symptoms depending on their size, number, and location.

Types of Fibroids (based on location in the uterus):

  1. Submucous Fibroids:

    • Grow towards or just beneath the inner lining of the uterus (endometrium)

  2. Intramural Fibroids:

    • Grow within the muscular wall (myometrium) of the uterus

  3. Subserous Fibroids:

    • Grow towards the outer surface (serosal layer) of the uterus

Symptoms of Uterine Fibroids (if present):

  • Lower abdominal or pelvic pain

  • Heavy and prolonged menstrual bleeding

  • Pressure symptoms such as difficulty in urination or bowel movements

  • Infertility or recurrent pregnancy loss

  • A sensation of fullness or heaviness in the abdomen

Management of Uterine Fibroids depends on symptoms, size, location, and fertility desires:

  • Myomectomy:

    • Preferred in women who wish to retain fertility

    • Involves removal of fibroids while preserving the uterus

  • Hysterectomy:

    • Recommended for women who do not desire future pregnancies and have severe symptoms

    • Involves complete removal of the uterus

Laparoscopic Myomectomy
This is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to remove fibroids while preserving the uterus. It is the treatment of choice for women with symptomatic fibroids who desire future fertility. Laparoscopy offers faster recovery, smaller incisions, and less postoperative discomfort compared to open surgery.
